A few things should be noted here about the Lord’s Supper: It was a meal, not a cracker and juice (v. ) Everybody brought something. (v. 22) Everybody is supposed to be on equal footing, but this wasn’t happening at Corinth. Ben mentioned in in his original Google+ post that he noticed that at a passover there’s a massive amount of food.   The first “Lord’s Supper” was actually a Jewish Passover meal (cf. Matt ; Luke ). A typical Jewish Passover meal involves lots of food and wine, with numerous symbolic items and actions during the meal.

In the Passover the slain lamb represented the efficacious death of the lambs in Egypt. In the Lord's Supper, which emerges from the Passover, the bread and wine represent the atoning sacrifice of Christ Jesus as the true paschal lamb. Neither the slain lamb nor the bread and wine contain in and of themselves any efficacy.   The Lord’s Supper by Thomas Schreiner and Matthew Crawford is the tenth volume in Broadman & Holman’s NAC Studies in Bible and Theology series. Not surprisingly, as B&H is a Baptist publishing house, the second volume in the series dealt with baptism. When I read that volume, published in , I was not sure they would do a volume on the Lord’s Supper.

“The sacrament of the Lord’s Supper has been one of the more hotly contested topics in church history, so people in the church undoubtedly have questions about it. Dr. Keith Mathison presents a clear and biblical explanation of the Lord’s Supper that will surely help people in the church to have a deeper understanding of the sacrament. Analyzing the abuses of the Lord’s Supper by using the types of ritual infelicity as described by Ronald L. Grimes, I argue that the practice of the Lord’s Supper by the Corinthians was a socio-religious ritual failure caused by its participants’ inappropriate manners.

Or we might say that the Passover was the Old Testament Lord’s Supper. The reason the Lord instituted the Passover was so that people of Israel would always remember and proclaim their redemption from Egypt.

Far from being an empty ritual, the Lord’s Supper is a means of grace, a source of spiritual nourishment, and true communion with Christ and His church.

In the Lord's Supper we remember the past. The covenant that brings us the forgiveness of sins was ratified, or "cut," by the shedding of Christ's blood. The Lord instituted the Supper on the eve of His impending death in the context of a Passover meal.

"Remembrance" itself is a covenantal word. The Israelites were often commanded to. WAS THE "LAST SUPPER" THE PASSOVER MEAL. S everal conflicting opinions exist regarding the meal that took place on the last night of the Messiah's life.

Many people believe that Yeshua ate a Passover meal with his disciples, as the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke appear to indicate. God had commanded that the Passover would be a permanent ordinance for his people. It was a memorial of what God had done in the Exodus (Exodus ).

It foreshadowed the coming Messiah who would die for his people’s sins, and set them free from spiritual bondage. The set order of the Passover, is known as the “Seder”. The point is that what Paul is saying here, when he says, “When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat.”, is that though they were going through the motions of Communion, performing the ritual of the Lord’s Supper, their private lives and how they treated each other showed that their hearts were far from God, and a.

Christ is telling us, This is my blood, newly testified. He is not telling us that “the Lord’s Supper” is a replacement for the Passover (as some presume). Veritably, there is.

There is only one ritual commanded in the New Testament for routine use in the Church: the ritual of the Lord’s Supper. I believe that Satan does not want the Church to do the rite of the Lord’s Supper, and has expended tremendous energy to prevent our doing it the way Jesus said to do it.

If it Looked Like a Passover Sedar, Then It Must Have Been One. We believe that Yeshua kept an actual Passover seder or “Pascal supper” as Alfred Edersheim calls it in his book, The Temple—Its Ministry and Service (p. ), albeit, an early one. The Gospel record is clear on ths.

Consider the following. It was at the Jewish Passover Seder (Service) that the Lord's Supper was instituted. In Exo God commanded the perpetual keeping of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Passover.

Even though later Judaism added extra-biblical traditions and practices, the essential elements of the service were still kept in the time of the New Testament (and are still observed today). What is the significance of the Lord's Supper? Celebrating the Lord's Supper is deeply significant and full of meaning.

First held when Jesus kept the Passover feast with His disciples on the evening before He was betrayed, the Lord's Supper, or Christian Communion, looks back to the death of our Lord and ahead to His victory over death at the resurrection, as well as His .The Lord’s Supper is a testimony.

By partaking of it, I testify that Jesus’ body was broken for me and that He shed His blood for me. I thereby proclaim the death of Christ. We are to do this in remembrance of Him. When I break the bread, I remember how His body was broken for me. When I drink of the cup, I remember that He shed His blood.

The New Covenant replaced the Old Covenant when Christ, the Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians ), was sacrificed (Hebrews ). The sacrificial system was no longer needed (Hebrews ). The Lord’s Supper/Christian Communion is a remembrance of what Christ did for us and a celebration of what we receive as a result of His sacrifice.
